East Hampton Town proposes cutting environmental department, laying off long-time chief

The East Hampton Town Board is planning to eliminate the town’s Department of Natural Resources, putting 24-year department head, Larry Penny, out of job.

At the board’s work session on Tuesday, May 6, Councilman Brad Loewen proposed reconstituting the Natural Resources Department as a division of the Town Planning Department rather than its own agency. The switch would force the elimination of the department’s top two positions, director and assistant director.

Three Southampton hotels go on the market

Three Southampton hotels have gone up for sale, piquing the interest of developers, hotel chains and celebrities alike.

The hotels—The Atlantic, The Bentley and The Capri—have 49 suites and 84 rooms among them, representing about 43 percent of the total hospitality market in the Southampton area, according to Massel Knakal Realty Services, the Manhattan-based broker of the sale.

Weather postpones Division tournament

The Division IV boys tennis tournament got underway on Saturday at Shoreham/Wading River High School, with players from Leagues VII and VIII competing in the first two rounds of play. Quarterfinal play was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 13, after bad weather postponed the tournament on Monday.

Results from those matches will appear in next week’s edition.
